“Sensible people accept good advice”.   Prov 10:8 GNB

There are plenty of smart people around. They seem to latch on quickly to the ways in which to “get on”. At school they are quick to finish their exercises and work hard – that means they get good marks, get liked by the teachers, become examples to their fellow pupils, and surge ahead in life. They usually, but not always, go to university and repeat the achievement pattern. They get good jobs, become managers and knock up good salaries. They seem to be “born winners”. But they have one distinctive characteristic – they are good listeners; they have the willingness to learn and are teachable. They latch on to good advice and profit from it – which means they learn from other people’s mistakes. These people are worldly wise and appear to some to be “clever”. Not all are clever academically. But they are street wise and know how to value a dollar – they understand money, how to get it, how to use it, and how to make money make more money. They never despise the humble source from which they get good advice. It doesn’t matter to them the status of the adviser. If it’s good advice, then it’s grist to their mill.

And many of these willing learners become teachers of others, passing on their knowledge, their wisdom and their insights. When you become a Christian believer, the Holy Spirit will become some part of your faith and understanding. Let him shape your faith and instruct you how to become an ever-growing disciple of Jesus. And do all you can to hand on the good advice you have received to other believers. Hopefully, they will prove to be teachable as well.

Lord, make me ever more teachable.

I pray today Lord for the pilots of aircraft. Enable them to arrive for their duties well rested and alert. Let the other staff in the cockpits be willing and able in their respective roles to support the captains and let all be fully aware of the responsibilities that they carry. Let the cabin crews be helpful. I ask it in Jesus’ name. AMEN
