“Good people will be remembered as a blessing”.    Prov 10:7 GNB

In the middle of all the complicated ups and downs of a normal life we do occasionally (very occasionally!) come across a person who is exceptionally kind, generous, understanding, tolerant, hard-working, thoughtful, sensitive, talented and utterly devoted to God. You start to wonder if such a person ever makes a mistake, does something silly or naughty. They appear to be able “to walk on water”. And on top of everything else they do good as if it’s ingrained within them. You think of such a person as “One in a million”. We wonder when we meet such a person, “However can one-person thread such a way in this troubled and confusing world, where cunning evil waits to entrap the naïve and the unwary?” And we assume that most really good people have to be both naïve and unwary – they don’t seem capable of being suspicious and calculating.

When those people die, they do live on in the memory of those who knew them. Whilst they are still alive, they are a blessing to those who know them and those who meet them. Their presence anywhere seems to bring a fragrance to the place. They are usually an inspiration to people – and sometimes a challenge. They inspire people to attempt big things, and they help them to achieve significant goals. People who know them want to be good people themselves. It is sometimes said of such people that they “lift others up”. Others say of them that “they point me to Christ”. Usually it is Christ dwelling in them who motivates them and who empowers them to rise above the common level. They are a blessing – and when they have gone their memory is a benediction.

Lord, thank you for those people who have inspired me.

I pray today Lord for artisans of all trades as they use their skills and expertise to enhance homes, buildings, factories and manufactured goods. Grant that the people they serve will appreciate their dedication and craftsmanship and that they will see how their work contributes to the good of society. I ask it in Jesus Christ’s name. AMEN
