The Word in Your World
“Good people will receive blessings”. Prov 10:6 GNB
It is generally accepted in Christian circles that “God is his own reward”. The way he blesses you is not by awarding you a bigger pay packet, giving you a nice, easy life, or protecting you from illness or misfortune, keeping you out of trouble, or ensuring that no bad luck comes your way. If you worship Jesus Christ, live a disciplined devotional life, are honest and reliable, exercise love and care for the poor, and support your church, even working for it and leading in it in some role, you come to know more of God, worship becomes more meaningful, you experience joy, peace of mind, understand more of the Bible and live in a closer walk with God.
In Old Testament times they assumed that obedience to God brought you material blessings and physical health and prosperity. In some Christian circles today, that idea has been resuscitated. “Give a lot of money to the church” they say, “and God will repay you with unbelievable prosperity”. However, most Christians know that God doesn’t deal with people in this “financial bargain” manner. You can’t put God into your pocket or turn him into a personal asset manager. God does bless some people financially, but not everyone. And there are millions of simple trusting people who love God and serve Jesus, living clean and unimpeachable lives but still remain poor all their days. And some who have given their lives to God hoping to receive material blessings have had their faith rudely shaken when the heavens have not opened and filled their bank accounts with bounty. Jesus Christ, the strong Son of God, was never rich. Never forget that undeniable fact!
Lord, help me to love and serve you in the way you choose.
PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
I pray today Lord for all families where a new baby is being born. Help the mothers to give birth and to rejoice in the safe arrival of their child. Prompt the other family members to draw closer together and give thanks to you. May the new arrivals be strong and grow up to live useful and creative lives. I ask it in Jesus’ name. AMEN
