“The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.” Genesis 21:11 NIV
Being forced to send a child away is almost more than any loving parent can bear. Sarah’s demand to get rid of Ishmael was a heavy pressure upon Abraham. But the Lord knew. He knew all about Abraham’s heavy heart and distress, all about his perplexity, just not knowing what to do. No doubt, Abraham prayed and discussed the matter with the Lord. He heard and cared about Abraham’s need and set about to meet Abraham’s need. He spoke to Abraham, encouraging him and relieving the distress and grief. We need to take note when the Lord spoke to Abraham: at night (see verse 14). Apparently, Abraham was doing what we all do when we are under heavy distress: pray. He was either lying in bed or up during the night, praying and thinking the conflict through. And the Lord met him and met his need. As for Sarah, she was right. Ishmael needed to be sent away, for his mocking and ridicule was too imbedded in him to change. The conflict would only grow worse. But Sarah’s attitude of cruelty toward Ishmael was wrong, and her failure to seek and trust the Lord for an answer was wrong. She had broken Abraham’s heart and caused heavy distress and grief for him. The Lord reminded Abraham of His great purpose in Isaac, the promised son. The Lord will always speak to us through His Word meeting the needs of our hearts, relieving our distress and grief, relieving whatever conflict wages within our souls. It encouraged Abraham and it encourages us.

Lord, as we turn to You in our conflict, You guide and encourage us.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Thank you Lord, as we turn to You in our conflict, seeking a right response, You give us the guidance and encouragement we need. AMEN
