“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:2 NIV
David begins Psalm 42 by stating he longs for God as a deer pants for water. In verse 2, it tells us that David is like a dehydrated deer: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” In a similar way we’re to go to God for satisfaction, for soothing and for safety. Thirst must be satisfied, or we’ll die. Have you ever been that thirsty spiritually? Does your soul pant for God? Just as a deer knows instinctively where to find water when it’s thirsty, so too, we must seek Him with everything we’ve got. When a deer is thirsty, he will run full speed until he finds some water. During a time of drought deer will alter their daily routine to make sure they can find water. If we are really thirsting for God, if we honestly desire to be closely united with Him, we will push ahead, disregarding those many things which impede our progress. The opinions of others, our temporal concerns, the many inhibitions which plague us which hinder our progress in getting to know the Lord. While we’ve been made to thirst for Him, not everyone comes to Him to have that thirst quenched. Many times, we look to other things to satisfy us. Jeremiah 2:13: “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” How often have we been tempted to dig for our own springs of water, rather than going to Jesus, who offers living water to all who are thirsty?
PRAYER THOUGHT
Lord, I confess I dug for my own water, instead of Your living water.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Lord, I confess and repent, in seeking to satisfy my soul, I went seeking my own source of water instead of the Living Water You freely offer to all who are thirsty. AMEN
