“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 NIV
Letting our light shine has to do with our being Holy Spirit empowered witnesses before the world. The point of Jesus’ admonition is clear. As believers by God’s grace in Christ, we ARE the light of the world. Light exists to shine, to give off its light, to radiate in the midst of darkness. That is evident from any instrument of light we find and use, for example, a lighthouse here on the coastline. It is the purpose and meaning and value of light that it shines. Therefore, as the light of the world, that’s what we are in the world for as disciples of Jesus, to shine in the midst of the darkness. By our walk and by our words through the power and ministry of His indwelling Holy Spirit we are to reveal our identity in Christ Jesus, showing forth God’s grace, the kingdom life we have been given and brought into. It is simply letting CHRIST Himself shine through us, because He is THE Light of the world and He is in us by faith. HE is the One Who must be evident as we go about our calling in this world. When we consider the contrast between ourselves and the world, light verses darkness. The world of unbelieving people is darkness. They live in the realm of sin and under Satan. Full of spiritual ignorance and immorality, decay and death. Lost, stumbling and falling down in their willing darkness. We are the light of that world, through the indwelling power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
