“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 NIV
This verse highlights the contrast between authentic prayer and the outward performances that can sometimes characterize religious practices. During Jesus’s time, many people prayed publicly to draw attention and gain admiration from others, which detracted from the true purpose of prayer. Jesus challenges this behaviour and teaches us that authenticity is more valuable than public displays. When we take the time to seek God in our private space, we allow our prayers to be sincere and free from any ulterior motives. When we act for the eyes of others, our focus shifts from the Lord to seeking praise, and that can lead to a hollow faith experience. However, when we pray genuinely and in private, we are nurturing our faith, relationship with our Lord, and spiritual vitality. We are also assured that our Lord is aware of our prayers, even if others are not. The reward of our praying is not material blessings or visible recognition, but peace, guidance, and spiritual growth that occurs within us. It is not about asking for things. It is about building a relationship. Expressing our feelings, sharing our joys and sorrows, and finding a refuge in our Lord. Where we learn to align our wills with His plan for us. Closing the door for prayer equips us to deal with life’s challenges. Allowing us to be honest with Him about our struggles, doubts, fears, and aspirations, leads to healing and transformation and growing closer to His heart.
PRAYER THOUGHT
Lord Jesus, as we close the door to pray, transform us.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Thank You Lord, in closing the door for prayer equips us to deal with life’s challenges. Allowing us to be honest with You about our struggles, doubts, fears, and aspirations, leads to healing and transformation and growing closer to Your heart. AMEN
