“You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it.” John 14:14 NIV
What is meant by this verse? The name, in the New Testament, generally stands for the person. When miracles are wrought by the name of Jesus Christ, it is the personality and the power of Jesus Christ that is referred to. Believing in the name of Jesus Christ is believing not merely in a word but in Him, and His trustworthiness. To ask for anything in His name, is to put ourselves in His place as nearly as we can, and to ask for the things that He would ask for, and in the spirit with which He would present His requests. As the Holy Spirit produces His mind in us, and our lives reproduce His life, will our prayers be effectual. As we abide in Jesus Christ, as the life of the vine does that of the branches, so we can truly pray in His name, and find a certain answer to our prayers. Many have brought to our Lord many strange requests and have supposed that using His name they would receive what they requested. This verse does not encourage speculative or experimental praying. The condition of asking in His name is a willingness to know and to do the will of our Lord. To pray in the name or character of Jesus Christ is to remember that we are at most times ignorant, and our Lord is infinitely wise. We will receive an answer: Yes, No or Wait. These answers are the very best our Lord desires for us. As we surrender our desires into His careful and powerful hands, we will still be blessed.

Lord, as we ask in Your name, we surrender our desire to You.
