The Word in Your World
“You’ll recognize this as true – you with open minds; truth-ready minds will see it at once”. Prov 8:9 EHP
Some people develop an uncanny knack of picking up what’s right and wrong about what gets communicated. They listen to a commentator (or “analyst”) speaking about an event and, when asked how the person saw it, will say, “He talks an awful lot of sense”. People usually acquire this insight by years of study, reading and conversing about the situation, and discussing it with other, even better-informed minds. But it doesn’t just happen. They are not born with this deep perception.
The writer of Proverbs knew that insight and wisdom come as a gift from God. But the person of insight has worked hard getting it as well. “Only he who hungers and thirsts for righteousness can be filled. Truth and righteousness cannot be purveyed like a bit of merchandise. They can be given only to the person who is able to receive them, just as a seed cannot grow without a proper soil in which to germinate. Wisdom has much to give, but she cannot force her gifts upon those who have failed to fulfil the conditions of receiving them” (R.W. Schloerb, The Interpreter’s Bible, Vol 4 p828).
Christian believers need to have “truth-ready minds” as Eugene Peterson translates what others have called “insights”. It has to be cultivated, nurtured, used, and dedicated to God for it to grow and flourish. Really effective communication is a highly – prized skill – both in terms of sending out the communication as well as perceiving what is trustworthy and full of wisdom. Peter, the disciple said a profound truth when he exclaimed to Jesus, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life?” (Jn 6:68 GNB)
Lord, help me to gain insight and understanding.
PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Lord I pray for those people waiting for their vaccine treatment for the Covid – 19 disease. Help them to be patient and to hope that the vaccine will protect and save them from infection. Help all people to be supportive of others and not only to be concerned with themselves. Bring an end to this problem. I ask in Jesus’ name. AMEN
