“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”        Matthew 16:15 NIV

Jesus put this question squarely to the apostles at Caesarea Philippi. The same question continues to re-echo down through the ages. It has lost none of its relevance. On the contrary, it is even more urgent today than when Jesus first proposed it to His apostles. Jesus wants us to recognize Him for what He is and who He is. He does not want us to know Him merely with intellectual knowledge, but with heart knowledge, which we require through prayerful listening. Jesus wants us to come to know Him so intimately that we will be so moved to become more like Him, to imitate Him so closely that we can be identified with Him. This is the importance of His call, “Come and follow Me.” (Mark 10:21) We are invited, through being born again from above, through the power and ministry of the Holy Spirit, to become members of His family. This call which comes through the Grace of God, to be His disciples, is worthy of our total response in love. But Jesus warns us that if we do not put His Words into practice we are like the “foolish man who built his house on sandy ground. (Matthew 7:24ff) If we are to enjoy the life of Jesus in all its fullness, we must take time in our busy schedule to keep our focus fixed on Him so that we might be receptive to His life, through the power and ministry of His indwelling Holy Spirit in us and through us. This is not a luxury. It is essential. So who do you say Jesus is? Do you hear His call?

PRAYER THOUGHT

Lord, give soft hearts to respond to Your call.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Lord Jesus, as the only begotten Son of God, our Saviour and Lord, You are calling us afresh. Give us soft hearts and hard feet as to listen to You call. AMEN
