“My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.” Luke 1:47 NIV
Mary mentions several characteristics of those who are the recipients of God’s great mercy. They know God personally as their Saviour. Mary calls God “my Saviour”; it is very personal. Mary was from a Jewish home; the Jews were God’s chosen people. She could easily have thought, “We are good Jewish people. We keep the feasts and follow the commandments. That’s all I need.” But even though she was a moral young woman from a good family, she knew, even as a teenager, that she needed a Saviour. She had personally trusted in God and His Messiah as her Saviour. It is not enough to know God as your parents’ Saviour. It is certainly not enough to belong to your parents’ church. Christ must be your Saviour. We need to see ourselves as sinners who have broken God’s holy law. We stand guilty and condemned before Him. There is nothing we can do to deliver ourselves. All we can do is rely on His mercy as our Saviour. It was the man who cried out, “God, be merciful to me, the sinner” who went down to his house justified before God (Luke 18:13).
What about you? Have you come to see your need of a Saviour in Jesus Christ? If you have already accepted Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, would you ask Him to restore to you the joy of your salvation in Him? We so easily forget what God has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ, the only Saviour and Lord.
