“But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God will glory in him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.” Psalm 63:9-11 NIV
David had complete confidence in God’s righteousness and firmly believed that God would execute justice in his situation. God would destroy those who sinfully oppressed and sought to harm him (v. 9). David was certain that God would vindicate him, and his certainty stirred him to praise the Lord with great joy (v. 11). He concluded this psalm with a strong declaration of faith that God would deliver him. Trouble will either push us away from God or draw us closer to Him. Many people fall away from or stop following the Lord when a painful crisis ravages their lives. Some become angry or bitter toward God. Some blame God. Others cannot accept that God would allow such a thing to happen, that He did not act supernaturally to prevent it. Imagine how easy it would have been for David to become angry and blame God when his own son tried to destroy him. Instead, David chose to draw nearer to God. We need to follow David’s example and cling to God in times of trouble. We need to trust God to strengthen and sustain us. When others lie about us or sin against us, we need to remember that God is righteous and that He will deal with all evildoers in His good time. Undoubtedly, we will face problems in our lives, sometimes excruciatingly painful problems. But those are the very times we should hold fast to God and draw closer than ever to Him. He loves us and He will sustain us through the dark nights and deep valleys of our lives. God has given us a wonderful promise: if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8).
