“But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in Him.” 1 John 2:27 NIV
We do not always need an elite order of the clergy to give us the official interpretation of biblical truth, especially of the gospel. We need to read and understand the Word of God for ourselves with the help of the indwelling Holy Spirit. This is not to say that every passage of Scripture is easy to understand! Nor is it to say that we should not read commentaries to try to discover the correct interpretation of difficult texts. But it is to say that on the essential truths of the Bible, any Christian who can read and who makes the effort to compare Scripture with Scripture in reliance on the Holy Spirit, can grasp the meaning. In John’s mind was Jesus’ promise which appears in John 14:26, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” and that the Holy Spirit would teach the disciples all things. Jesus also called Him “the Spirit of truth” (John 14:17), which is behind John’s words here, that He “is true and is not a lie.” This means that the truth of the gospel is not a subjective matter of personal interpretation. It is objectively and absolutely true in every culture and every age. We must believe it in order to be saved and any contradiction of the gospel is a lie. Let us give thanks that we have the Holy Spirit, dwelling within us, as children of God, and He is the Spirit of Truth Who leads us into the Truth, through the Word of God – the Truth that sets us free in Christ.
