“So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:10 NIV
The lives of the Colossian Christians were to be influenced by the knowledge of the will of the Lord. So, too, our lives! But this knowledge is to be translated into practise. The word “live” or “walking”, as read in some translations, is the characteristic Bible word used to describe the character of the Christian life – yours and my life! A life filled with energy, movement, progress, and the knowledge of the Lord’s will is essential for such a life. We are given a profound and searching thought, “live a life worthy of the Lord”. Surely this is impossible! But these are the plain words of Paul. To walk or live a life worthy of the Lord sounds almost incredible, yet this is one of the possibilities and glories of grace in our lives. Paul is fond of this word “worthy”. We are to live a life worthy of our calling, worthy of the Gospel, worthy of being part of the body of Christ, worthy of the Lord. We can be perfectly sure that Paul would not put such an ideal before us if it could not be realised in our everyday lives. All the Lord’s commands imply promises. He promises us the strength, power and ministry of the Holy Spirit Who equips us for every good work, to the glory and honour of His Name. May we rejoice in the privilege we have to live a life worthy of the Lord!
Lord, thank You for the privilege of living a life worthy of You.
