“Skilled living gets its start in the Fear-of-God, insight into life from knowing a Holy God”.     Prov 9:10 EHP

There is more to good living than learning a few tricks and wrinkles, useful as they are. There is more to life than making money. Some do it with skill, but others come unstuck because money has a habit of curling its wicked tentacles around your heart and warping your rational thinking in ways you don’t realize.

The writer of Proverbs knew this. Back of his adoration of wisdom was what Peterson translates as “Fear-of-God”. This does not mean being fearful or afraid of God at all. Rather the reverse. It means seeking God, getting to know him, respect him, and loving him and his laws. It means placing him first. The wisdom follows from this. Knowing God is the start of smart living for it creates wise living. Under God you get money in its right perspective. With God’s help you learn how to “get on with other people”, live in a community of people, be respectful of leaders and you learn how to learn. You also learn what’s important to learn and what’s not worth learning. Working with God you learn how to progress and how to become mature. You learn how to make a living how to make a marriage, how to bring up a family. Knowing God, you learn what is wrong and what is evil in God’s eyes. It is important that you know and worship not any old God, but the God who is holy for this is an essential definition of who God is and what he’s like. Get a wonky idea of God and you’ll become a wonky person yourself. Follow Jesus and you’ll be on the right track.

Lord, help me to fear and love God in Christ.

I pray for those people who dislike their daily work, and those who even dread it. Help them to face each new day again with courage and a sense of self-respect that they are employed whilst millions aren’t. Enable them to do their best in it and to encourage those round about them. Keep them cheerful. I ask it in Jesus’ name. AMEN
