SO YOU WILL NOT SIN!

“I write this to you so that you will not sin.”                      1 John 2:1 NIV

John steers a careful course that does not become shipwrecked on the rock of sinless perfection, nor on that of licentiousness. John writes, “so that you will not sin.” While we will never attain sinless perfection in this life, we can and must live with consistent victory over sin. Although John was an old man who had walked with the Lord for many years, he knew that he was not beyond the possibility of sinning. While the general tenor of our lives should be growth in holiness, we will never get to the point where we never sin. If someone claims to have achieved sinless perfection, just hang around him for a while and you will see that the “emperor” of sinless perfection is only deceiving himself. He really has no clothes! If we understand what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross, we will not take advantage of it by sinning more. Rather, as we think about God’s amazing grace shown to us and as we think about His love that caused him to send His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins, it will make us hate sin and strive to live to please our Saviour. Robert Robinson wrote the hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” Later, however, Robinson went through a time of severe depression because of his sin. Later in life, he was led to read the third verse of the hymn he had written, “O to grace, how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee.” Robinson’s own hymn was used to turn his wandering heart back to the Lord. That same grace of God flows freely to you, no matter how great your sin. Understanding God’s grace in Christ’s sacrifice is the key to holiness.

PRAYER THOUGHT

Lord, thank You for your grace that flows so freely to us.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Lord, as we think about Your amazing grace shown to us and as we think about Your love that caused You to send Your Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins, it make us hate sin and strive to live to please You, our Saviour and Lord. AMEN
