“To be made new in the attitude of your minds.” Ephesians 4:23 NIV
The first thing to do if we are going to put on the new self is to get a new mind. The mind is the root cause of sin and corruption and deceitful lusts. If we want to gain victory over sin, we need to begin with our mind. What we know and what we think determines who we are and how we behave. Physically, we are what we eat, but spiritually, we are what we think. That is Biblical truth. Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinks . . . so is he.” We’ve got to stop the old self from doing the thinking! Our minds are not renewed simply by gaining knowledge, but rather by changing the way we think (Romans 12:1-2). The only way to do this is through Bible study and prayer. As we immerse ourselves in the Word of God, reading, studying, memorizing, meditating upon it, as we pray through God’s Word, as we attend Bible Studies and as we sit under the teaching of God’s Word, the Bible, which is living and active, it will transform our minds, it will renew our minds, it will change our thought patterns, it will give us a whole new perspective and outlook on life. It is that simple. But it’s not easy. There are no shortcuts here. It takes time, and effort and patience, and diligence and faith. As we do this, we will gain a new mind. Are you willing to embark on the journey of renewing your mind with the Word of God?
