“So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.”     Colossians 1:10 NIV

What a glorious ideal! We are to live to please the Lord in everything. Not only doing what we are told but anticipating His commands by living in such close contact with Him that we instinctively know the thing that will please Him. These words speak of a depth of spiritual life that very few are familiar with, yet here in this text, we are facing very definitely, a call to realise that which our Lord has placed before us. In pleasing the Lord, we are to bear fruit – to be fruitful in every good work which our Lord has prepared in advance for us to do. Even though there may be very few results of our service to our lord, the service itself may and should be fruitful. Furthermore, there is the growing in the knowledge of God. There is a difference between the knowledge of His will and the knowledge of God Himself. Paul wrote in Philippians 3:10, “That I may know Him”. Jesus said in John 17:3, “They might know You”. The knowledge of His will leads us to the knowledge of God himself. The question is: Do we just have a head full of knowledge about the Lord or do we have a heart that has been transformed by knowing the Lord intimately which flows into knowing His will? A heart that has been transformed bears greater fruit to the glory of the Lord than a head that is just filled with knowledge about the Lord!

Lord, may we always live our lives to please You by being fruitful.

Lord, by the ministry of Your Holy Spirit, may we have hearts that have been transformed by knowing You intimately, which will flow into knowing Your will, and bearing fruit to the glory and honour of Your Name. AMEN
