LIVING IN THE LIGHT

“Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.”                     1 John 2:10 NIV

Whether “light” should be capitalized to represent Christ or whether it refers to the truth of God’s Word, I don’t know. It doesn’t matter in that if we abide in Jesus Christ, we also abide in His Word which sheds His light into our hearts. To abide in the light means to live with our lives exposed and open to God’s Word. We allow the Word to shine into the dark recesses of our minds, exposing and rooting out that which is evil. John says that we cannot love our brother and sister without abiding in the light. If we love our brother and sister and abide in the light, “there is no cause for stumbling” in us. This may mean that we do not cause others to stumble in their walk with God because, out of love for them, we only say and do that which builds them up in Christ. The person who walks in the light will not stumble themselves because the light illumines their path (John 11:9-10). Walking in love preserves us from sin. Failure to love often leads us into other sins. For example, lust and sexual immorality are serious sins, but both are rooted in a lack of love for others. To lust after a woman is to desire to use her to gratify your desires. Take the sins of greed, theft and murder. They all stem from a failure to love others. Invariably, those who commit these sins love themselves quite well! None of us need to work on loving ourselves, as the “Christian” psychologists repeatedly emphasize. The task is to love others as we love ourselves!

PRAYER THOUGHT

Lord, thank You that as I abide in You, Your love and light will touch others.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Thank You Lord that as we allow Your Word to shine into the dark recesses of our minds, exposing and rooting out that which is evil, Your love flows through us in loving our brother and sister. AMEN
