“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help.” Psalm 63:6-7 NIV
Sleep did not come easy for David while he was hiding from his rebellious son in the desert. As he lay awake on his bed, he remembered or thought about God. During the night watches, the troubled king meditated on God. Commentator, Warren Wiersbe, notes that “the Jews had three night watches, from sunset to ten o’clock, from ten to two o’clock, and from two to sunrise.” All throughout the night, whenever David was awake, his restless soul was soothed by dwelling on two great truths about God. Firstly, the Lord was his helper. As David looked back over his life, he saw that God had sustained and assisted him in every crisis. Secondly, the Lord was his protector. He kept David under His wings, the way a mother bird draws her young to her bosom and covers them with her wings. In this world, we are living in a dry and thirsty land, a barren wilderness where there is no spiritual water. In the midst of this burning desert, there is an oasis, a well of living water. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, God offers us this living water (John 7:13-14). We drink that water through worship, entering God’s presence and communing with Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). In the New Testament, the Greek word for worship, proskuneo, means to kiss, implying passion. When we passionately shower our love on the Lord, our souls are sustained and refreshed. His love is our water in this sin-saturated world. His presence is our oasis. During those long nights, focus on Jesus Christ, the fountain of living water.
