IF ANYONE SINS

“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”            1 John 2:1 NIV

John does not want his readers to conclude that Christians are characterized by sin. So before he says, “If anyone sins . . .”, he clarifies his purpose, “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.” “This” refers to the message that God is holy and the importance of walking in the light, not in the darkness. It also refers to what he writes in 1 John 2:1-2. The words, “My dear children,” reflect John’s pastoral heart for them. He cares for them as a father or grandfather would care for his little ones. He has lived longer than they have and speaks with experience about how to live a holy life. So, we should pay close attention to his message. The key to holiness is to understand God’s grace as seen in Christ’s sacrifice for our sins. John’s thought here is that we need to realize that God has graciously forgiven us completely in Jesus Christ. He is at the right hand of the Father, pleading our case, even when we sin. Our standing before God does not depend on our performance, but rather on Jesus’ blood and righteousness. Properly understanding this truth will lead us to sin less. The key to holiness is to understand God’s grace that was lavished upon us when Jesus Christ died for our sins. May we never take the grace of God for granted.
