“Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the Sower and the reaper may be glad together.” John 4:36 NIV
Earthly wages are of no value after we die, but wages that pay rewards for eternity are worth working for! A billionaire on his deathbed who has not laid up treasure in heaven is like the person in Jesus’ parable who planned to build bigger barns, but was not rich toward God (Luke 12:15-21). He was a fool. But the one with a harvest mindset who labours for souls stores up eternal joy. We do not know for sure to whom Jesus is referring when he mentions the one who sows. It could be the Old Testament prophets and John the Baptist; or, it could be Jesus and the woman. But the fact that someone sowed before Jesus reaped leads us back to the thought: to reap a harvest, seed must be sown (John 4:37-38). There is no reaping without prior sowing. But we often forget this. We expect to reap without sowing. We wonder why we don’t see people coming to Christ. Often the answer is simple: we haven’t been sowing any seed! At the very least, begin praying for opportunities to share the gospel with others. Jot down a list of those that don’t know Christ with whom you regularly have contact and begin praying for their salvation and for God to give you an opportunity to speak to them about the Saviour. To reap a harvest, we have to start by sowing the seed.
