DOES NOT SIN!

“Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.”         1 John 3:9 NKJV

This verse has generated a lot of confusion and controversy. It is one thing to say that no one who is born of God practises sin, but then John goes farther and states that they are not able to sin! I am sure that my experience is like yours: I feel quite capable of sinning and years of walking with the Lord have not lessened my ability to sin! So, what does John mean? Firstly, we must assume that John did not contradict himself or any other New Testament writer. He said in 1 John 1:8, “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.” He said that he is writing so that we may not sin, but then he adds in 1 John 2:1, “and if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” He would not have written those words if believers were incapable of sinning. Secondly, John’s main concern is to be pastorally practical. He does not want his flock to be deceived by the heretics. If God has imparted new life to us, so that we have become His children, we cannot go on living in sin. When we do fall into sin, we will recognize that we cannot go on in it. God will convict us of it, through the indwelling Holy Spirit in our lives, and He will lead us to repent and walk in righteousness.

PRAYER THOUGHT

Lord Jesus, thank You for leading us in a life of daily victory over sin.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Lord, as You have imparted new life to us, and we have become Your children, we cannot go on living in sin. Thank You that when we do fall into sin, we will recognize that we cannot go on in it. Thank You for convicting us of it, through the indwelling Holy Spirit in our lives, who will lead us to repent and walk in righteousness. AMEN
