CLINGING TO HIM

“I cling to You; Your right hand upholds me.”             Psalm 63:6-7 NIV

Upon recalling the Lord’s faithfulness in helping him, David declared that he would follow God and cling to Him. The Hebrew word used in this verse dabaq means “to follow hard” which can be interpreted as to cling to, to stick to, or to stay with. It is the word used to describe a man’s cleaving to his wife (Genesis 2:24) and of Ruth’s staying with Naomi after her mother-in-law told her to turn back (Ruth 1:14). In his time of intense trouble, David reaffirmed his devotion to the Lord. David confessed his dependence on God to strengthen and uphold him with His right hand, a symbol of God’s mighty power. The Lord had always sustained him through every crisis and conflict. He dared not claim as his own the victories God had won, and he knew that he would not survive Absalom’s revolt without God’s help. For this reason, David resolved to stay close to God. Some commentators have a different view of this statement. They say that David was declaring that he could only cling to God by God’s power, not by his own efforts. Commentator Derek Kidner writes, “It is God Himself who makes clinging to God possible, and the firmness of His upholding grasp is implied in the allusion to the right hand, the stronger of the two.” (Derek Kidner, Psalms 1-72, p. 242.) Certainly, this is true, for it is God’s grace that empowers us to be faithful to Him. Let us give thanks to God for His amazing Grace in Jesus Christ, and His holding onto us, as we hold onto Him.
