A ROCK AND A REFUGE

“Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.”        Psalm 31:5 NIV

Today is the 32nd day of Lent, a time to ponder the wondrous love of the cross, the empty tomb, and how to live between the already and the not-yet, in the hope that all God’s intentions will be completed. Psalm 31 sings of a powerful faith in a God for all seasons: a rock and a refuge in the lonesome valley. David says, “Into your hand I commit my spirit.” This speaks of a tremendous amount of trust. We are given insight into the severity of David’s situation. David relinquishes control of the situation and allows God’s will to rule. We are witnessing the essence of surrender. Surrender is the ability to place our lives in God’s hands. In Luke 23:46 we read about Jesus uttering these very words while on the cross. Jesus gave His life wholly over to God’s control. We see in Jesus the ultimate example of surrender. Jesus surrendered His life completely to God’s will. After speaking these words, Luke records that Jesus breathed His last breath. How foolish it would have sounded to the Jews standing nearby when no sooner had Jesus said that He had committed His life to God did He die! Surely this would have been a point of mockery for some standing there that day. Jesus declares that He entrusts His life to God moments before He dies. David, after saying that he has entrusted his life to God, says that God has rescued Him. Jesus entrusted His life to God and three days later God rescued Jesus by raising Him from the dead. Are we willing to commit everything into God’s hands?

PRAYER THOUGHT

As our Rock and Refuge, Lord, we commit our ALL to You.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

David and Jesus committed their lives to You, Lord, as their Rock and Refuge. We choose to do the same today. AMEN
