“I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33 NIV
There is a new relationship with God available in the New Covenant. The Israelites were God’s special people. This is the promise that the Lord had made to Abraham (Genesis 12:2). Yet, after Abraham, this relationship was based purely on ancestry. If Abraham was your ancestor, you were “in”. As long as your parents had circumcised you on the eighth day, you had it made. Perhaps, the physical aspect of their relationship is what caused such idolatry among the Jews. They had never chosen for themselves to be a part of God’s people. Thus, they weren’t concerned about keeping up their end of the bargain when it came to their relationship with God. In the New Covenant, ancestry doesn’t matter at all; it’s a new relationship with God. One chooses for one’s self to respond to this new relationship. We become part of God’s people through our faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord. We don’t have a relationship with God because of our parents. We know that God cares about us through a personal relationship with Him. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). David doesn’t say that the Lord is a shepherd or that He is your shepherd. He makes the declaration with personal conviction. To our Lord, we are not just a number or a member of the church. He cares about us so very much. This new relationship puts a responsibility on us – we need to foster and nurture this relationship. We are to walk with Him on a daily basis where we seek to obey His Word and spend time with Him. Are you walking with Him daily?
PRAYER THOUGHT
Lord, I want to walk with You and spend time with You each day.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Thank You, Lord, that we are not just a number to You, or just a member of the church. You care about us so very much, and we want to walk with You on a daily basis where we seek to obey Your Word and spend time with You. AMEN
